The present paper dwells on the physical principles which determine the structure of alloys and their working properties. It discusses the composition and properties of 14, 10 and 9k alloys based on the Au-Cu-Ag system and the effect of Zn additions. White alloys based on the Au-Cu-Ni-Zn system and those containing Pd are discussed. The limitations of working properties of the first group are elaborated.
