A review of the literature on tarnish of low gold dental casting alloys has been presented. The alloy and the environmental factors that contribute to tarnish have been discussed. The main cause of tarnish in low carat jewelry alloys is their contact with sweat, which is chemically similar to saliva in the oral environment. The information presented here is therefore of interest to the jewelry industry.
