1991 - Ergonomics for the Jewelry Industry
An overview of the science of ergonomics is presented, with an emphasis on the hand. Discussion centers on how to analyze operations as part of an ergonomics program, how to follow general OSHA guidelines, how to take advantage of opportunities for informal training, and how to integrate ergonomics into overall safety, health, and quality control activities. Stone setting and engraving are identified as tasks that present risk factors for cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs). The predicted increase in the number of CTD cases can be averted if preventive measures are undertaken now. It is suggested that anecdotal evidence and information sharing can help reduce repetitive motion disorders in the jewelry industry.
