Electroplating is both an art and a science. Jewelry manufacturers who utilize plating as part of their manufacturing process must be able to harness the technology to effectively achieve artistic goals.

This paper examines scientific principles involved in the electroplating process, including a look at the sub-microscopic phenomena which occur when an electric current is passed through a plating solution. Deposit characteristics such as brightness, color, hardness and wearability are explained in light of these principles.
