This paper is a review of the ways used to make synthetic gems. Crystal growth from a melt, from a solution, and from vapor is outlined. The various furnaces and devices are described and simple drawings shown. High pressure diamond production is described.

Some of the history leading to useful gem production is mentioned. Opal and pearl making methods are included. There is a reference section and a listing of books of some value for further reading.
