An overview of the science of sampling is given. The paper is broken down into three main sections: the mathematical relationship and creation of variance, the process techniques of sampling and finally, comparison tests results of various methodologies. The main ideas presented deal with understanding where sample variance comes from, how to improve the sample and the accuracy of the results. In all test results presented, the variance in preparation and assaying is small in comparison to that of sampling.
