1997 - Nd: YAG Laser Engraving of Jewelry

Laser engraving allows personalized parts to be manufactured without the expense of creating personalized tooling or molds. This paper examines the use o f the Nd:YAG laser for engraving jewelry. The basic operation of the Q-switched Nd:YAG laser system with a scanning beam is reviewed and the application o f this technology for engraving precious and non-precious metal jewelry is discussed. Graphics capabilities, engraving precision, engraving depths, and speeds are examined. Examples of jewelry items are presented with laser engraved features including the jewelry manufacturer’s trademark, complex graphic designs, and deeply engraved names, logos, etc. The process of generating electronic data used by the laser from custom artwork is discussed. The collection of vaporized materials is discussed and safety and health issues are examined. Cost considerations for utilizing this technology are discussed.
