The goal of this paper is to give the manufacturing jeweler an overview of the microscopic characteristics that indicate or prove treatment of commonly used gems. In the past, we have shown manufacturing jewelers at the Symposium how to spot stones that are suspicious in visual appearance due to treatment or identification. This paper will give the manufacturer the knowledge needed to prove the existence of treatment in a gem. The issue of gem treatment is more and more prevalent in the minds of the final consumer and thus must be addressed at every level of our industry.
