The chemistry of the reaction of calcium sulfate with carbon is given. The experiments that validate this chemical path and the resulting formation of metal sulfides that cause defects are explained. Experiments with investment additives that will remove carbon from a mold are given. Some further ideas and opinions about other aspects of using sulfate-bonded investment are offered.
