2007 - Sheet Metal Manufacturing - Some Basics
This presentation is a follow-up to the 2006 paper, "What Can We Expect from a Precious Metal Semi-Finished Product?" When producing precious metal sheet and strip, there are other important criteria, apart from tolerances, which must also be taken into account. These have to do with thickness, width, length, flatness and surface finish. Achieving the desired metal properties is much more complex than it looks—a number of processes have to be used in order to achieve the desired technical parameters. These include melting, rolling, heat treatment, straightening and cutting of the flat material. Other aspects discussed in this paper include the different karat gold, silver and the pgms—with a particular emphasis on tips and tricks useful to small workshops.
