2013 - Creative Approaches to Design and Manufacturing in the Digital Age
Through a series of case studies, this paper will illustrate new approaches to design, manufacturing, and consumerism afforded by digital technologies and in particular Additive Manufacturing (AM). It will focus not on the production technology itself but on the creative opportunities it affords. The freedom and flexibility of AM offer not only complex geometries; it allows a reassessment and reinvention of relationships between designer, manufacturer and consumer. The designer can explore new ways of working, the manufacturer can respond to niche markets, and the consumer can become engaged in the creative process. Digital manufacturing is a revolution that is blurring the boundaries between art, design and craft. It is a technology that will change manufacturing and consumerism forever.
