Digital technologies are redefining economies, industries and society as we know it. But they are also ushering in a foundation for a new era of cognitive business. Every day we generate over 25 quintillion bytes of data, but over 80% is unstructured or invisible to current technology. Cognitive systems take digital to the next level. They can understand that data, learn from it and reason through it. Applied to manufacturing, cognitive is an evolutionary step that enables high flexibility and changeability, driving efficient production in fast-changing markets. Cognitive agents can also advance sustainable manufacturing.  This paper explores the digital journey and the value of cognitive manufacturing as the destination.
