Any bench jeweler will tell you that well-established approaches and practices are critical to high-quality, efficient, and consistent work. Research presented in “Bench Myths” in 2014, however, showed that some commonly held opinions about best practices at the bench are not borne out when tested. This paper takes a continuing look at fundamental components of work at the bench and tests the effectiveness of different approaches with the goal of determining what is effective and what might simply be myth perpetuated by repetition and habit.
