The innovative use of guilloché lends itself to the new directions we are currently seeing in jewelry making and metalworking. What was once thought of as a final finish is now being pushed past that boundary and moving into the starting point for ideas and forms to showcase machine-engraved decorative surfaces. This means that more makers are planning and customers are ordering pieces that either showcase or incorporate guilloché. With the arrival of my book, Guilloché: A History and Practical Manual, the recipes for more than 30 basic patterns are now available for anyone who has access to a rose engine or straightline machine. This means that people can start decorating straight away, leading to more creativity once the foundations are built. This paper is an exploration of the future of guilloché as well as the promotion of the craft.
