This paper describes the application of cuttlefish bone casting, an almost forgotten technique that is inexpensive and uncomplicated. It shows how the cuttlefish casting technique can be applied as an element of art. The many design options and structures that can be created with this technique are explained. The process of mold making and the construction of more complex molds are shown. Practical applications of this technique are looked at as well as typical sources of errors. It is compared with other known casting techniques to show where it has clear advantages such as producing a silver casting in a half hour. A metallographic analysis reveals factors such as microstructure, porosity and oxidation.
