2019 - Make Your Jewelry Design “Pop” with Generative Design
In the product design process, designers deal with multiple criteria, which are both qualitative and quantitative. This paper proposes an idea for developing a computer-aided jewelry design system for automatically generating 3D models to be used in supporting designers for exploring design ideas/concepts and as a digital source of inspiration. The proposed system was developed based on interactive genetic algorithm (IGA) integrated with multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA). IGA is used in initializing and handling qualitative objectives such as designer/customer satisfaction and/or aesthetic considerations. MOGA is used for shape optimization by optimizing multiple quantitative objectives such as shape parameters in parametric design. Jewelry items were modeled by parametric modeling using Rhinoceros® software and Grasshopper® plug-in. The system prototype was developed in Grasshopper with the help of Octopus plug-in for multi-objective optimization. Finally, the system was developed in the form of a plug-in to be used in CAD. Case studies of jewelry design will be covered in the paper.
